Step 1. Revision
Ask some students to read and spell some words, and practice dialogues with direction. Some students can express their difficulties in English.
Step 2. Reading
1. Ask students to read the title and guess what the passage is about. Ask how many questions are raised in the passage. Do Activity 3 together and show the class where to go to find the answer. Then mark the places on the map.
2. Then ask them to read the text and answer questions.
3. They can check with a partner. Collect their answers in a whole class setting.
4. Let some students answer these questions:
(1) Where is the National Gallery?
(2) How can you get to the Houses of Parliament?
(3) Which is the way to the Tower of London?
Step 3. Learning
1. The class should read the words aloud. Group the class to check their meanings. Give the answers and ask if they understand. Say which places you can see in the photos. And match the words with pictures.
e.g. bridge church museum palace store tower
2. When you read English, there may be new words or phrases. Some of them may be names which you often can’t translate. Look at words which begin with capital letters and decide if they are names.
Step 4. Mark the places
Let the students match the places with the map:
1. National Gallery
2. London Eye
3. Tower of London
4. Houses of Parliament
5. Buckingham Palace
Step 5. Writing
1. Activity 5. Write directions to places in London. Choose a place to start on the map, and then choose a place to finish. Write directions from your place to start. Don’t say the name of the place where you finish.
2. Ask the students to following as you read the example, and explain what is happening.
3. They can compare their answers with a partner. Collect the answers from the class.
Step 6. Practice
1. Make some sentences with directions. Let the students make dialogues with these sentences in pairs.
2. Complete each sentence with the correct word.
3. If you wish, have a few students read out their paragraphs to the class.
4. Work in pairs, read your partner’s directions. What is the name of the place to finish?
