I should say that parents do not owe(欠) their children a college education. If they can afford it they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they must not feel guilty(内疚) if they can’t. If the children really want to go they’ll find a way. There are plenty of loans(贷款) and scholarships(奖学金) for the bright and eager ones who can’t afford to pay.
When children grow up and want to get married their parents do not owe them a certain payment on a house. They do not have the duty to baby-sit their grandchildren.
Do parents owe their children anything? Yes they owe them a lot.
One of the duties that their parents should do is to give their children a personal worth. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong but it's often better to let children learn their mistake by themselves in time. All our parents should do is to trust them, respect them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms(批评) are really needed they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.
Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful(尊重) to elders to teachers and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.
No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world you owe the child something.

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a shade(遮蔽)against the sun.
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, back in the eleventh century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honor and power(权力). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in high office or by royal people such as the kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the middle ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it became a symbol of power.
Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

On January 18, a 12-man Chinese team landed on the Antarctic icecap peak(南极冰盖最高点). They are the first people to reach the peak of Dome A(海穹A). It is 4039 meters above sea level(平面).
The team built a station there to study the changes of the weather, to get ice samples(标本) from 150 meters to 200 meters below, and to do other studies. So far, the team has got nearly 100-meter-long ice samples from a place about 300 meters under the icecap peak.
It is the first time that people have been able to get samples from the icecap peak in Antarctic and it is very important for people to study the weather changes and environmental changes in this area.
The Chinese scientists also built a weather study system at the peak. The system can send out information about temperature, how strong the wind is, and many other things about the weather.
The Antarctic icecap makes up (组成) 70% of the earth’s fresh water(淡水). By studying Dome A, scientists can get the lowest temperature of the earth and other information about the world’s weather changes. We can’t get this information from other places on the earth because Dome A is the best place for this kind of studies. So it is very important to land on the peak of Dome A.

You either have it, or you don’t---a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
l If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to(与……有联系) the way you are facing.
l If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree-something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
l Simplify(简化) the way for finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as towerblocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!
