King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was young, he was strongly influenced by Thoreau and Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of non-violent resistance(非暴力抵抗). Having received a Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) from Boston University, he became a political and religious leader of the non-violent civil rights movement in 1955. The “dream” is a dream of brotherly love and equality for the Black and White. Thus, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1964, but he was murdered four years later.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin (起源)of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other. Later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined (结合的)to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations(联系)---the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style(文体). Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can give his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech silly and boring.

During my travels through the mountains of Greece, I was only ever scared once. It was dusk and as I walked alone I came across six large wolves(狼)that were feeding on the body of a dead animal. I had heard many stories about wolves as a child and it was this animal that I feared more than any other. The wolves before me were huge, at least 6 feet long and covered with thick grey fur.
As I went near, the wolves left the blood-covered snow around the body and started walking towards me, one after another. They stopped about 20 metres from me and watched. The lead wolf raised his head into the air and took in a deep breath, as if he was smelling me. The animals looked both beautiful and frightening, but I knew I could not show them my fear. As I drew nearer, the lead wolf raised its head once more but this time made a long, loud cry. The awful cry can be heard across the silent valley. I had never heard a more frightening sound. I was almost sure it was a sign to be death.
Every moment I expected to see the wolves run at me. I knew my only hope was to pretend(假装) I had no fear. I walked past the line of wolves, like a general(将军)moving among his soldiers. They cried out loud again. But when they saw that their cry did not cause me to change my way or make me run, they feared to come after me, so they let me pass and returned to the dead animal.
If I had turned back or tried to run away when they marched out to meet me, I am sure the wolves would attack me in a moment. But my show of false(假的)courage intimidated them and kept them back.

C. To make people aware of the danger of wolves.
  D. To stress the need for courage when in danger.

Tatyana McFadden was born in 1989 in Russia, with an illness that caused her not to be able to move half of her body. She was placed in an orphanage(孤儿院) that was unable to provide a wheelchair for her. Over the next six years, Tatyana taught herself to walk by using her hands and arms as feet and legs.
When Tatyana was six years old, an American woman named Deborah McFadden visited Tatyana’s orphanage. The orphanage workers tried to interest Deborah in adopting(收养) one of the able-bodied children, but she paid much attention to a special girl. “Tatyana was moving on the floor,” Deborah remembered. “Back at my hotel that night, I could not take my mind off her. Unbeknownst(背着) to me, she told everyone that day, ‘That’s my mother,’ which she had never done before.”
