As a volunteer teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Long Zhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected. It didn’t look like a school at all.
The school had only three rooms, one for Grade 1,2and 3, and the other for Grade 4,5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level (水平). To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, reading test papers every night, I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hardworking children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.
I have worked in Long Zhou for a year now. I am very happy, and the experience has been very useful to me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.

Ladies and gentlemen, thanks a lot for joining us. I hope you have enjoyed the music. Now, please let me tell you why we hold this concert.
Every day, hundreds of children in Africa lose their young lives because they have terrible diseases or don’t have enough to eat. Most African countries are poor. The governments do not have enough money to take good care of the poor. And many parents have no work, so they have no money to buy enough food or medicine. We hold the concert to raise money for the children in Africa.
Many organizations are trying to help the poor in Africa. The organization, the Feed Africa Fund, spends millions of dollars every year on food for them in Africa. All the money comes from the kind and generous people, just like all of you.
Every dollar you give this evening will go to the Feed Africa Fund. Just one dollar can buy enough rice or corn to feed a family of four for three days.
Ladies and gentlemen, please be generous. Thank you.

Many kids think they are ordinary. They think they aren’t the prettiest or the smartest. At the same time, they think they aren’t even the ugliest or the silliest. Everyone feels that way sometimes , especially in middle school. Kids seldom(很少) realize how special they are. When they see amazing athletes or cool pop stars, they often think: what have I got?
It is all part of growing up. Growing up means understanding what you can do and what you can offer the world. Maybe you aren’t the best, but that doesn’t make you “ not amazing”.
Do yourself a favor. Think about your friends, carefully. Write down a list of things that you like about them. Think about why you are friends with them in the first place. You will get to know that in the end, no matter if they aren’t the smartest or the prettiest or the most talented , they are great in their own way. And they feel just the same about you!
Remember, it gets easier as you grow older. You will realize that being the best at something is great, but it’s okay if you cannot be the best. If you just live your life and try hard, you are still pretty amazing.
