二、完形填空(本题共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
There was a young woman who took great pride in her flower garden. She was raised by her grandmother who taught her to love and   16   for flowers. So her flower garden was the best.
One day, while she was looking through a flower list she often   17    from, a picture of a plant caught her eyes. She had never   18   blooms(花) on a flower like that before. “I have to have it,” she said to herself, and she   19    ordered it.
When it arrived, she already had a   20   prepared to plant it. She planted it at the back of her yard. It grew well, with beautiful green leaves all over it,  21   there were no blooms. Day after day she continued to water it, feed it, and she even talked to it trying to make it bloom. However, it was   22   .
One morning weeks later, when standing before the vine, she felt very   23   that her plant had not bloomed. She was giving thought to   24    it down and planting something else in its place.
It was at this point that her neighbor, whose   25    joined hers, called over to her. “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have   26    the blooms of that vine you planted.” The young woman walked   27    the gate into her neighbor’s yard, and sure enough, she saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was  28    with blooms.
There were indeed the most beautiful blooms she had   29    seen. The vine had grown through the crevices(缝隙) and it had not flowered on   30    side of the wall, but it had flowered on the other side.
Sometimes one may not see the good result of his effort, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t successful.

Even nowadays there are a lot of misunderstandings between nationalities. Let’s have a look at what the following people have to say.
Maria Conti: I find the English people insincere (虚伪), cold and unfriendly. They keep saying “Thank you”, “I’m sorry”, even when they don’t know each other. They are even polite to their own relatives! Except for helping you find your way in the streets, they aren’t really friendly and never invite you to their houses.
Giannis Sinios: On the contrary I found them both broad-minded and friendly. I was invited to people’s houses and they all showed great interest in my ideas, Greek life and people. In England I learned that it was possible to be warm, friendly and polite at the same time.
Judy Brown: I lived in both Italy and Greece for a few years. At first there were a few misunderstandings between my foreign friends and myself. For example, I once gave a Greek friend a present for her birthday. I was rather sorry that she didn’t unwrap it immediately. What’s more, she even didn’t thank me until I asked her if she liked it! I’ve learned from different experiences that a lot of foreigners find our attitude to what we English people call politeness is rather insincere. The father’s role in the family is important. One researcher says babies who are cared for by their fathers have greater cognitive (认知的) development at one year of age than babies not cared for by their fathers. Another researcher reports that by spending time with their pre-school children, fathers can help to develop children’s language ability. Researchers also point out that for school-age children, fathers are one bridge with the outside world.
Fathers who value education have children who do better in school than those children whose fathers don’t value education. What’s more, fathers who spend quality time with their children may give their children happy memories which may last a lifetime.
While each father is a unique person who educates children in his own style, good fathers have something in common.
Good fathers attend their children’s school activities. They also involve the children in their lives and the adult world by taking them to see the workplace, or by taking them when the car needs to be repaired, etc.
Good fathers expect a great deal from their children, but also accept and support the unique individuals (个体) that their children are becoming.
Good fathers prefer explanations and reasoning to force.
Good fathers know their time with children is really an investment (投资) in them.
Being an involved father is good for children and good for fathers. Both children and fathers have the chance for growth and development. Today’s lifestyles are changing. More and more fathers are keeping a balance between their personal life, work, and family time.
