People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to
their eyes. Everything else seems 17 .A person 18 does a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing becomes near-sighted then.
People who are farsighted suffer from just the 19 problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have 20 in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much 21 , they must wear glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism(散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become 22 because of cataracts(白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. 23 eye sees things from a slightly different angle(角度).To prove this to 24 , look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. These days haze(雾霾)is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality. When one drives to work for one year,he uses as mush energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If it is necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a tonne of pollutants, including CO2,from going into the atmosphere.
Carpooling is another way to reduce carbon emissions(排放).Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half.
What you do inside your living space can have a big effect on the air quality outside it. You can do a lot of things inside and around your home that will help you pollute less and save some money.
A large amount of our energy supply comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use,you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months,or updating some of your electrical appliances to low-energy models. For example, you can use energy-saving lamps that require less energy and last 10 times longer than common bulbs.

My name is Jim. My story begins when an old sailor came to the inn(小旅馆)where I lived with my father. My father was the innkeeper.
“Do many people came here?” the old sailor asked my father.
“No,” my father told him. “It is a very quiet place.”
“Good,” the old sailor said. “Then this is a place for me.”
“And what’s your name, sir?” my father asked him.
“Just call me ‘captain’”, the man said.
He put some gold coins on the table. “Tell me when I have spent all these,” he said.
Not long after he came to the inn, the captain said to me, “Do you want to earn some money?”
“Yes, please,” I answered. I was only a boy at the time and never had any money. “What do you want me to do?”
“Keep watch for a man with one leg.” he said, “Tell me as soon as you see him. Do that and I’ll give you a coin every week.”
At first, the Captain was a very quiet man and did not want to talk to anyone. But there were nights when he drank a lot of rum. Then he talked a lot and became very noisy. He told stories about bad men doing bad things, and he sang the same song over and over again at the top of his voice, “Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest. Yo-hap-ho! And a bottle of rum.”
My father wanted him to leave because some visitors stopped coming to the inn. But, even when the gold was spent, my father didn’t dare to tell him to leave.
Then father became ill, and Dr. Livesey came to see him. After giving my father some medicine, the doctor came into the inn. When the doctor waited for a man to bring his horse. The Captain started singing the same song again.
The doctor asked him to be quiet. “There was a sick man here,” he said angrily.
The Captain took out his knife and pointed it at the doctor.
“Put that knife down, man,” the doctor said. “And if you keep drinking rum, you’ll soon be dead.”
The Captain was very angry. He began to move toward the doctor.

In the most southern part of our planet, there's a place that's covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica(南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest(恶劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world's least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty(《南极条约》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine(海洋的)biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen(速冻)food which can be heated easily is people's daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create 'night'.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force(七级以上的)winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What's more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists' passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

六.书面表达
With the development of economy, mobile phones are more and more widely used in our daily life. However, some students and teachers have different ideas about whether the students should own their mobile phones at school.
Some students think that they may have their own mobile phones. If so, they can contact their parents when necessary. What's more, they can read news with it. Besides that, they can easily search for information they need.
However, some teachers are against it. They think that students not only play games but also send answers to each other in exams with mobile phones. What's worse, students spend too much time on them at night so that they are sleepy in class in the day time.
In my opinion, students needn't own mobile phones. We must focus on our study. Even if we need to call somebody, we can ask our teachers for help.
