Ⅰ.Analysis of the Teaching Material
1.Status and Function
The topic of this unit is about gift giving.In this unit students learn how to compare qualities.
Such topic is very practical and meaningful.It can make sure students know how to give gifts to somebody.
(1)In the first period Section A opens with a picture.The picture introduces the target language for students to practice the new language.
All activities in this period introduce the key vocabulary and the target language.Activities 1b and
(2)In the second period all activities provide listening and speaking practice.Students can improve their listening and speaking skills by doing these activities.At the bottom of this page,there is a grammar focus box.It provides students with a clear revision of Modal should and How about(formulaic).
(3)All activities in the third period provide listening and speaking practice using the target language in this unit.Pairwork and groupwork present an opportunity for students to measure their vocabulary production against their comprehension and encourage students to talk about their own experiences about gift giving.Students can improve their integrating skills.
(4)Section B introduces new vocabulary while recycling the target language presented in Section A.In the fourth period all activities give students a chance to remember more vocabulary words.And students can also have an oral practice using the target language.
(5)Students can improve their reading skill by doing Activity
(6)Self Check section helps students review all key vocabulary as well as new grammar items.It ends with a cartoon using the target language in an amusing way.

This activity introduces key vocabulary.
Go through the instructions with the class.
Get a student to read the list of gifts and let students repeat.Then circle any words they don’t understand.Ask students which words they circled.Explain the words by simple drawings or using the words in other sentences.For example,point to a dictionary in the classroom and draw a picture of a bicycle.
Look at the first two column heads.Use examples of very cheap gifts (a pencil,a candy bar) and very expensive gifts (a new car,a TV set) to review the meanings of these two terms.
Look at the last two column heads.Say,The two words interesting and boring are opposites.Ask students to give example of activities or TV shows that are interesting and boring.
Have students write the name of each gift under one or more of the columns.Then ask,What are some other gifts you can think of?Add them to the chart.
Discuss the answers.

This activity gives students practice in understanding the target language in spoken conversation.
Look at the picture and the gifts in the second boy’s thought bubbles.Say,Please tell me the name of each gift.(scarf,dictionary,camera and tennis balls)
Point to the conversation in the picture and ask a pair of students to read it.

Ask questions to check that students understand the conversation.For example,Is he buying a gift for his mother?Is the scarf an interesting gift?
